Your Questions, Answered

2D, 3D and 4D ultrasound scans use high-frequency sound waves to create images. There is no known risk when scans are performed correctly by trained professionals. We follow recognised safety guidance and keep scan time to what is necessary.

Image quality depends mainly on your baby’s position, placenta position and the amount of fluid around the baby. For 4D scans, eating chocolate or drinking orange juice around 30 minutes beforehand may encourage movement, but results cannot be guaranteed.

The clearest 4D images are often obtained between 26 and 29 weeks. Scans may still be possible outside this period, but image quality can reduce later in pregnancy as space becomes more limited.

Twin scans are available. We generally recommend booking slightly earlier, often around 27 weeks, because babies may have less room later in pregnancy. Additional time or charges may apply depending on the package.

A comfortably full bladder is normally helpful for early confirmation and sexing scans. It is usually not required for later growth or 4D scans. Your booking confirmation should explain the preparation needed for your appointment.

A qualified sonographer performs the scan externally over the abdomen using ultrasound gel and a handheld probe, similar to many routine hospital pregnancy scans.

Yes. Partners and loved ones are welcome to share the experience, subject to the room capacity and clinic policy. Check with your chosen clinic if you plan to bring several guests or young children.

No. Sex identification is optional. Tell the sonographer that you do not wish to know, and the relevant area will be avoided as far as reasonably possible.

These scans are not intended to replace diagnostic or routine hospital scans. If the sonographer notices something that may require further assessment, you will be advised to contact your midwife or hospital.

Contact the clinic by email, telephone or letter with the details of your concern. The team should acknowledge your complaint promptly and explain the expected response timescale.

Scans are carried out by suitably qualified and experienced sonographers. Examination time is limited to what is needed, and equipment is maintained and serviced to support safe, responsible ultrasound practice.
